NEW JALPAIGURI - DARJEELING: One of the most enjoyable of India's toy trains is the one linking the town of New Jalpaiguri in the plains to the lovely hill station of Darjeeling in West Bengal and is the narrowest of the regular narrow gauges. The 88 Km long journey up the mountains in roughly 8 hours, offer stunning and breathtaking view of the Himalayas.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has been accorded the position of a World Heritage Site. Special impetus has also been given to the Darjeeling-Siliguri sector of Indian Railways. As part of this, the station building and rolling stock have been restored to the original façade, as far as possible. Siliguri, the starting point of the hill train to Darjeeling, is well connected to Calcutta, Delhi, Guwahati, and other places. This train was started in 1881. Most of the locomotive, which are in use, were manufactured in Glasgow, UK, in the year 1899 to 1928. At present, the train can pull only 2 coaches and capacity of 1st class coach is 12-17 passengers while the second class can seat 30. Since last year, the diesel locomotive has been introduced between New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling. Fare is approx. Rs. 350/- Per ticket in 1st class. There is another train running between Kurseong & Darjeeling with a steam locomotive but has only 2nd class. It departs Kurseong at 0700 Hrs & arrives Darjeeling at 1000 hrs. Again it departs Darjeeling at 1500 hrs & arrives Kurseong at 1800 hrs. Fare is approx. Rs 30 per ticket in 2nd class. This train covers the following stations and distance between each pair of stations is about 8 - 10 km. (Train Fares and timings are subject to change without notice)
Please Note Nowadays the track between new jalpaiguri and siliguri is under conversion to broad gauge. as such it is operating only between siliguri and darjeeling. nowadays only one train is operating between siliguri & darjeeling and one local train is operating between kurseong & darjeeling
