AIR INDIA’
INAUGURAL MUMBAI - NEW YORK DIRECT FLIGHT:
Air India newly acquired
Boeing 777 touched down safely at the JFK Airport, New York on its inaugural
flight from Mumbai on August 1. The airline now offers a daily non-stop service
between the two financial capitals. (ETD Mumbai 0045 local time ETA JFK 0710
local time on the same day. On its return, ETD JFK 2130 local time and ETA
Mumbai at 2215 local time the following day). As part of its promotional blitz
in New York, the Maharaja was spectacularly displayed at the Times Square.
Besides this, advertisements of the airline promos are listed the pages of the
New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
AIR INDIA TO USE SITA AIRCOM NETWORK:
Air India will deploy SITA's state-of-the-art air-ground
communications services for both voice and data link in its operations. SITA’s
AIRCOM Server, known as ACARS, in addition to allowing straightforward
communication between pilots and air traffic controllers, also allows the
uploading of weather and flight plans and downloading of engine performance
data. Globally, SITA operates over 850 VHF ground stations in over 160 countries
making it the world’s largest private data radio network.
JET AIRWAYS COMMENCES DELHI-TORONTO FLIGHTS FROM SEPTEMBER:
Jet Airways has recently
announced the introduction of a new flight linking Delhi with Toronto via
Brussels, five times a week. This flight will also give Jet Airways' passengers
an opportunity to connect to New York (Newark) via its hub in Brussels. At
Brussels, flights will be synchronized in order to provide passengers seamless
transfer access between Delhi - Newark and Mumbai - Toronto.
AIR DECCAN
COMMENCES DAILY JAMSHEDPUR - KOLKATA FLIGHTS:
Air Deccan commenced its daily flight connecting Jamshedpur to Kolkata on August
26. A 48-seater ATR aircraft was deployed to serve this route. However, in order
to achieve optimum time efficiency, Air Deccan has decided to phase out their
old ATR 42-320 aircraft and replace these with new generation ATR 72-500 fleet
shortly.
SPICEJET PLANS TO EXPAND NETWORK TO PORT BLAIR
AND COIMBATORE:
Starting this winter,
SpiceJet is planning to expand its route network to destinations like Port Blair
and Coimbatore. The airline recently added Kochi to its network. The airline
currently serves 15 destinations.

AND DEUTSCHE BANK OFFER ‘MILES & MORE’:
The two best German brands – Lufthansa Airlines and Deutsche Bank —have come
together to offer Miles & More credit card to the Indian travellers. The Miles &
More Credit Card is more than a frequent flyer program. It does not expire if
the customer stops travelling. Rather, as long as the purchases are being made
on the card it remains valid. The card has been launched on two platforms. The
Platinum platform - focuses on the lower segment, and Visa Signature platform on
the high-end consumer.
MALAYSIA’S AIR ASIA TO START FLIGHTS TO AMRITSAR IN OCTOBER: Malaysia’s budget airline Air Asia is set to start
three flights a week in October to Amritsar from Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia is a
preferred destination of the people of Punjab.

AIRWAYS TO ADD HYDERABAD TO ITS INDIAN ITINERARY:
Following its commitment to the Indian market, Kuwait Airways is all set to
expand its India operation with addition of Hyderabad as its new destination,
this November, with a likely service of 3-4 flights. The carrier is also
expected to add one more flight to Ahmedabad taking the overall flights to four.
AIR FRANCE TARGETS
A LARGER GROWTH IN INDIAN SKIES:
Air France expects its revenue from India to grow by 15-20 per cent in the
current financial year by increasing their capacity both in terms of number of
seats and frequency of flights to India. This winter, Air France will be adding
a fourth frequency between Chennai and Paris while KLM will be adding two
additional flights between Hyderabad and Amsterdam, taking the total number of
services from Hyderabad to six per week.

Experiencing high load factors on the south Indian route, Air France plans to
enhance its service to this area and is also considering Goa and Kolkata as new

ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS LAUNCHES ‘BUSINESS CLASS ONLY’ FLIGHTS TO
MUMBAI: Deploying
a Boeing 737, the Japanese, All Nippon Airways (ANA) launched a new service
between Tokyo and Bombay on September 1. Offering only 36 business class seats,
it will have six flights a week from and to Tokyo Narita airport and Mumbai.

OPENS IN NORTHEAST: Taj Group’s Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) budget chain Ginger
has launched its ninth hotel in Tripura. Tripura is fast emerging as a favoured
investment location and economic growth centre.
SUN-N-SAND MAKES
ITS PRESENCE FELT IN GOA:
With three hotels already running in cities like Pune, Mumbai and Shirdi,
Sun-n-Sand is all set to open its new venture in the beach city of India, Goa.
The unique feature of this hotel is that the whole building is based on a single
rock. The main hotel, housing 43 rooms, starts from the 3rd floor. Based in the
capital city, Panaji, the hotel intends to cater to the needs of domestic and
international business and leisure travellers.
CHOICE HOTELS TO
ADD FOUR NEW HOTELS TO ITS REPERTOIRE:
Choice Hotels is likely to develop four new properties by next year. The first
property to be launched in January next year in Ludhiana, under the Clarion
brand, is an all-suite 120-room venture. The two other properties coming up
under the Comfort Inn brand are in Delhi and Haldwani. The fourth property
likely to open this year is a 75-room venture in Chennai. Apart from this,
Choice Hotels intends to launch 10 more properties by the end of 2009.

REVAMPS ITS LOOK:
The Crowne Plaza sports a new look thanks to a revamped gym and re-furbished
fourth floor which opened in August. But its best feature yet, is the new and
one-of-its-kind banquet hall with a seating capacity of 800-1000. In addition,
the hotel has already started construction on its, plush up market, 11-acre
property on the Jaipur -Agra highway. Meanwhile, it is all set to launch a 175
room property in Kazakhstan next year.

Swosti Group
of Hotels is planning to introduce Swosti Chandan & SPA Retreat at Puri with two
speciality restaurants and bar. It would be one of the best equipped spas in

TO EXPAND IN

Shangri-la Group of Hotels is on an expansion spree in the Asia Pacific region

RAJASTHAN’S
SAWAN-TEEJ FESTIVAL:
Pomp and gaiety marked the
festivities of the Sawan-Teej at Rajasthan’s Pink City, Jaipur, from
August 11-16. Traditionally known as Teej, this festival is dedicated to
Goddess Parvati and commemorates the day when she was united with Lord
Shiva. The festival is held every year in the Hindu month of Shravan and
marks the advent of the monsoon. Young girls, newly weds and elderly women
attired in traditional costumes lent a colourful touch to the festivities.
KERALA CELEBRATES
CHINGAM AND ONAM:
Keralites celebrated their New Year on Friday August 17, with tens of thousands
of Hindus thronging the temples. ‘Chingam’, which happens to be the first
month of the Malayalam Calendar Year, is also the month of the Onam
Festival. Chingam symbolizes a new ray of hope after ‘Karkidakam’
- the month of deprivation.
ONAM:
The 10 day
Harvest Festival of Onam began on August 17 and concluded on August 27
with a grand celebration called ‘Thiruvonam’. Young girls and women made
floral patterns called ‘Pookalam’ to welcome the mythical demon King
Mahabali. This festival witnessed an amazing display of Kerala’s various
traditional arts from Theyyam, Kathakali (traditional dance), the famed
snake boat race and intricate traditional floral decorations.

TICKETS AT POST OFFICES:
In a major step to expand
the reach of railway ticketing, Indian Railways will make available computerized
railway tickets through post offices. The system - India Post PRS Centre — will
be initially introduced in thirty select post offices across the country. In
addition to the cost of the ticket a marginal amount of Rs 25 per ticket will
be levied. In another major initiative, The Railways has also extended the
services of the call centre number 139, which was available in Delhi earlier, to
metros like Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

STEAM ENGINE FAIRY QUEEN TO GRACE THE TRACKS AGAIN IN OCTOBER:
The world’s oldest steam
engine, Fairy Queen, will haul steam engine enthusiasts from Delhi to Alwar (ETD
9am ETA 4pm), and back from October 27 and will make a total of eight runs till
March 8, 2008. Its coaches are specially designed to recreate the nostalgic era
of the past. The Fairy Queen which took its first run with the Indian Railways,
150 years ago, in 1855 is featured in the Guinness Book of Records.

KIOSKS TO BE SET UP IN RAJASTHAN: Rajasthan is perhaps the most tourist friendly state in
India. It is now planning to set up electronic tourist information Kiosks
(eTIK) at around 120 prominent places of tourist
importance. The eTIKs would provide a variety of services to tourists displaying
tourist related general information, electronic ticket printing and a host of
other value added information.

14-DAY SOUTH INDIA TOUR PACKAGE:
Tamilnadu Tourism has
announced the launching of a 14-day rail-road package tour covering major south
Indian destinations. The tour - New Delhi / Chennai / New Delhi will comprise
travel by train from New Delhi to Chennai and sightseeing by hi-tech luxury A/c
/ Non-A/c coaches to popular destinations like Kancheepuram, Ooty, Coimbatore,

Parades, cultural programs and exhibitions depicting
India’s heritage marked the Indian Independence Day celebrations by non-resident

of people, including top city officials and a galaxy of Indian film stars and
other artists. Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar had the honour of being the

A wax model of Aishwarya Rai, India’s most famous and beauteous actress was

sporting a pink salwar kurta and an armful of bangles in a dance pose, was
unveiled amidst bollywood dancers performing to popular Hindi songs.

TOASTMASTER’S PUBLIC SPEAKING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP:
A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Vikas Jhingran, a PhD Scholar
at the Massachusettes Institute of Technology, recently won the 2007
Toastmasters International World Championship of Public Speaking. The contest
organized by Toastmaster, a non profit educational organization, also known as
the Olympics of Public Speaking, featured 10 finalists each of whom presented a
seven minute original speech.

ENDANGERED WHITE
BELLIED SEA EAGLES SIGHTED IN ORISSA:
At least 20 endangered white bellied sea eagles and their
nests were spotted, for the first time, in the forests of Bhitarkanika National
Park, Orissa. The eagle is characterized by its white colour on its head, rump
and belly and dark grey colour on the back of its wings and an impressive wing
span of seven feet. Its majestic appearance has earned it the name “Kurubala”
or the King of Birds.

‘RAKSHA BANDHAN’ TOO:
Pledging to save the fast depleting forests of Orissa’s, young girls
from the Mayurbhanj district tied rakhi’s around trees to help propagate
the need to regenerate the forests. The Rakhis were tied around Sal trees
on the occasion of ‘Raksha Bandhan’ amidst singing and speeches, with oaths
being taken to protect the forests. Organised by the ‘Jungle Suraksha Mahasangh’
(jungle protection group), the villagers have steadily helped protect and
maintain the forests.
ABANDONED DONKEYS
AND HORSES FIND SYMPATHETIC HELP:
“India Project for Animals and Nature” (IPAN), an
NGO in Nilgris, Tamil Nadu has pitched in to help injured, sick and abandoned
donkeys. Over 150 donkeys were treated at camps in Mettupalayam, while a
training camp was organized for the owners to train them in the care and cure of
their donkeys.

KERALA’S CAPTIVE ELEPHANTS:
A dozen elephants, from 3-yr old Unnikuttan to 95-yr
old Gangadharan, queued up to receive their microchips which were implanted
under their skin by way of an injection. The drive was to get every captive
elephant registered. Besides providing details of its owner / mahout, the card
would also carry details of its health to ensure timely medical assistance and
proper maintenance of these pachyderms.

STATE ANIMAL IS SNOW LEOPARD:
The rare snow leopard has
replaced the musk deer as Himachal Pradesh’s State animal, while the endangered
western Tragopan has been named the new State Bird, replacing the monal
pheasant. Going a step further the endangered ‘rhododendron campanulatum’ has
replaced the colourful State plant ‘rhododendron arboreum’. The snow leopard is
an elusive cat which descends below the snow line only in winter. The Western
Tragopan locally known as “Jajaurana” – king of birds, is listed on the
International Union for Conservation of Nature’s highly endangered species, and
is being bred in captivity at the Sarahan Sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh.

WILDLIFE MOVIE WINS COVETED AWARD:
Indian photographer-filmmaker duo, S. Karapurkar and S. Hegde’s wildlife film
“Wild Dog Diaries”, highlighting the social behavior of the Indian wild dog, won
the coveted ‘Best of the Festival Grand” Award at the 8th Japanese
Wildlife Film Festival. The festival saw a participation of 300 wildlife films. TOP

IAF PILOTS CIRCUMVENT THE GLOBE WITH MICROLIGHT AIRCRAFT IN
80 DAYS: A
micro-light aircraft flown by pilots Wg. Cdr. Rahul Monga and Wg Cdr Anil
Kumar arrived at Hindon, setting the new world record for fastest
round-the-world trip in this category. The expedition had been flagged off
on June 1 by Air Chief Marshal Major from Hindon as a part of the IAF’s
Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The aim was to circumnavigate the earth
(minimum distance of 36,889 km) in the shortest period of time which they
did in just 80 days.
TAPA’S FILM ON CHILD LABOUR MAKES IT TO THE SYDNEY FESTIVAL:
A film on Child Labour by 14-year old Tapa Bhowmick, a resident of a home for
destitute children himself, has been selected for screening at the Auburn
International Film Festival in Sydney. Tapa’s film “We See”, highlighting the
plight of child labourers all over the world, has been shortlisted in the best
film category. The teenager who once worked in a noodle factory, learnt camera
techniques and film production at a workshop conducted by ‘Muktaneer’ a non
governmental organization.

UP COUNTRY’S FIRST EVER CYBER CAFÉ FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED:
In a first of its kind in the country, Chennai has set up a special internet
café, free of charge, for the visually challenged, thanks largely to the efforts
of partially visually impaired NGO, Govind Krishnan and Sify who has provided
the centre unlimited internet access. Its specially designed software like JAWS
(Job access with speech) which is audio based allows the visually challenged to
use the computer at will. When switched on JAWS reads everything on the screen,
including web pages. This software was developed by the Bill Gates Foundation
and Freedom Scientific Group. TOP

FILM FESTIVAL TO BE HOSTED IN GOA:
Eighteen films from across three continents will be screened over five days
during the Goa edition of the Tri Continental Film Festival from September 28 to
October 2, at the International Centre, Dona Paula. Jointly organized by Moving
Images Breakthrough (New Delhi) and International Centre, Goa the Festival will
showcase the best films of the last three Festivals in a varied genre ranging
from humour, musical, documentary and feature. The Tri Continental Festival has
become a primary platform for human rights cinema of three continents – Latin
America, Africa and Asia- that form part of the global south.
DIVAR ISLAND CELEBRATED BONDERAM - AUGUST 25:
The centuries old Bonderam ‘Festival of Flags’, which is peculiar to the island
of Divar, was warmly welcomed with the playing of the traditional ‘Alvorade’
(the brass band) at 5 am. Thereafter, the evening got off to a vibrant start
with the traditional flag parade, led by the brass band. In a spirit of gaiety
and camaraderie, each ward of the island outdid the other with a spectacular
display of floats which were witnessed by a large number of domestic as well as
foreign tourists. As a grand finale to the festivities, a dance and grand
musical show and tiatr (local plays) were held.
VASCO WELCOMES ANNUAL SAPTAH FESTIVAL:
Gaiety and Pomp marked the
Saptah Festival dedicated to Lord Damodar in the port city of Vasco. The Bhajan
Saptah commenced on August 19 at 12.30 pm, with bhajans being sung continuously
for 24 hours amidst chanting of prayers. Entering its 109th year,
this famous festival is annually celebrated with the participation of Dindi
troupes, colourful tableaux depicting various mythological scenes and a massive
fair. Legend has it that the people of Vasco sought Lord Damodar’s intervention
after their city fell victim to a deadly plague. As a sign of his blessings on
the city, Lord Damodar gave them a coconut which was kept at the Joshi residence
in 1898. According to tradition, on the day of Saptah, the Joshi family starts
the festival by offering a ‘shreefal’ (coconut) to Lord Damodar.
INTERNATIONAL
CUISINE CONFERENCE IN GOA:
An international cuisine conference, organized by Indology Goa, was held in the
capital city Panaji on September 2. A hundred and fifty delegates from India
and abroad joined renowned culinary experts Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, Padmashree
Tarla Dalal, Neeru Gupta amongst others. Seven outstanding Goan chefs were
awarded lifetime achievement awards for their contribution to cuisine in Goa.
Papers on Goan and Gujarati food as well as one on bio-chemistry by a South
African scholar were presented at the conference.
