AIRLINES UPDATE

AIR DECCAN CONNECTS GOA TO HYDERABAD: Air Deccan, India’s first low cost carrier airline in continuance with its vision of connecting new routes, announced on 23 Oct their plans of launching the first direct flight between Goa and Hyderabad. The direct flight between Hyderabad, which is fast emerging as the IT destination after Bangalore, and Goa would help the people of not only Hyderabad but also cities like Vijayawada and Vishakhapatnam in visiting the holiday destination of Goa. The carrier started in August 2003 with 2 flights now flies 75 flights a day!

JET AIRWAYS VOTED BEST DOMESTIC AIRLINE IN ASIA PACIFIC: Leading private airline from India has been voted the best domestic airline by the readers of Travel Trade Gazette Asia & TTG China. This is second time in a row covering 14 countries in the region that Jet Airways has been conferred on with this award.

SINGAPORE airlines commences direct flight from Amritsar: The airline has started direct flights between Amritsar and Singapore with three times a week flight to Amritsar from 2nd October. Amritsar is the tenth Indian destination to be served by Singapore Airlines and its subsidiary, Silk Air. These direct flights designated as SQ 471 flying from Amritsar to Singapore and SQ 472 flying from Singapore to Amritsar will operate on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday every week. The first inaugural flight from Singapore landed at Raja Sansi International Airport at Amritsar on 1st Oct 2004.

AIR-INDIA TO BEAT COMPETITION BY DOUBLING THE CAPACITY: More than 5 million Indians are expected to go overseas this year while international arrivals are likely to be in the region of 3.1 to 3.3 million. Around 75% of international traffic from India is routed through foreign airlines. However with the limited open sky policy from November to March, private airlines like Jet Airways & Sahara will be able to start flying to newer foreign destinations. In the next 3 years, AI will double seat offering from around 5 million to 10 million by leasing planes.

LUFTHANSA’S INCREASED INDIA OPERATION: Lufthansa will be operating thrice a week on the Frankfurt-Hyderabad-Frankfurt sector from February 18, 2005 (subject to Government’s approval). The airline proposes to use an Airbus A-340-300 aircraft on the Hyderabad-Frankfurt flight, which is to be operated every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The airline announced that from January 1 next year, it would add two more flights on the Frankfurt-Bangalore-Frankfurt sector to operate a daily flight between the two cities (only during the limited `open sky' offer of the Indian Government till March 31, 2005). With the addition of the flight to Hyderabad and the two additional flights to Bangalore, Lufthansa would operate 34 flights a week, including a daily flight from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore.

CHINA EASTERN ADDS THIRD NON-STOP FLIGHT TO SHANGHAI: China Eastern Airlines now operate thrice weekly non-stop flights from Delhi to Shanghai and onwards to Beijing effective October 31, 2004. China Eastern Airlines offers the shortest flying time into Shanghai the ‘commercial and business hub’ of China. Flights will operate every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday arriving in Delhi at 0315 hrs and departing at 0430 hrs.

SRILANKAN AIRLINES ADDS 8 MORE FREQUENCIES: From 1 November, Srilankan Airlines has added 8 additional flights to India, one to Hyderabad 3 to Calicut and 2 to Chennai. This will take their weekly flights let wean Colombo and India to 77. Srilankan plans to position Colombo as a hub for the Indian Business traveller headed for Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Dubai. With the increased frequencies the Airlines hopes for a 25% incremental increase in the number of tourists to Srilanka from India.

BANGLADESH’S GMG AIRLINES FLIES TO CALCUTTA: Bangladesh’s only private carrier, GMG Airlines has started operations to Calcutta from Chittagong. This is the first phase, with the Dhaka-Calcutta-Dhaka flights to start next month.

MYANMAR AIRWAYS ADDS FOURTH FREQUENCY TO DELHI: Myanmar International Airways (MAI) announced its plans to add a fourth weekly flight from New Delhi to Rangoon, the capital of Myanmar (Burma) and beyond to four destinations in South East Asia. Under MAI’s new Winter schedule that began on 31 October flight 8M 602 departs New Delhi at 9:15 pm every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and arrives in Rangoon, at 01:30 am the following day offering onward connections.  TOP

UPDATE FROM LE MERIDIEN, COCHIN: The new block of suite rooms will soon be ready for inauguration bringing the total number of rooms at Le Meridien Cochin to 225. All suites in the new extension will have an unparalleled view of pristine backwaters and green coconut plantations. With the addition of this new block, the backwaters would be running through their property. 

 

OBEROI DELHI AWARDED BEST BUSINESS HOTEL: Business Traveller – Asia Pacific has given the best Business Hotel in New Delhi award to the Oberoi, at is annual Travel awards 2004 ceremony in Hong Kong. The award in based on a reader’s survey comprising mainly of corporate travelers who travel extensively on business as well as leisure.  TOP

DONKEY FAIR AT LOONIYAWAS: This 500 years old donkey fair used to draw buyers from as far as Afghanistan and used to be the largest in Asia, has however now got a very few visitors. This takes place 20 km from Jaipur. The fair got over on 23 Oct.

 

Grand Narmada Festival 27 – 29 Oct’04):  For the first time, the Department of Culture & Tourism (Madhya Pradesh) organised the Grand Narmada Festival at Bhedaghat (Marble Rocks). Tribal dance with music of Madhya Pradesh & Chattisgarh, "Piyabavri" classical songs, Gazals by "Bhupendra & Mitaliji" and Maharasleela" by the famous Indian Classical dancer "Uma Sharma" were performed. The featival was organised at full moon near the water fall.

GOA FESTIVAL IN DELHI: The Delhi-based "Goenkarancho Ekvot" in association with the Goa government will organise "Goa Festival" from  26-31 October at Goa Sadan, 18 Amrita Shergill, New Delhi. The six-day festival exhibited various aspects of Goan life, culture and progress
with the objective of encasing the Goan spirit and promoting Goan handicrafts, food and culture.

“NAVRATRI”, GUJARAT’S NINE NIGHTS OF ENDLESS CELEBRATION (14-22 October): Navratri is perhaps the longest dance festival in the world. Navratri (Nine Nights) is a colourful and ancient festival and dedicated to the Mother Goddess, Ma Ambe. Boys and Girls dance the “garba” and “dandiya” dressed in traditional colourful outfits. Tourism Gujarat organized a cultural extravaganza from 14 October, beginning with a mega cultural show with international, national and local troupes. A handicraft and handloom exhibition and bazaar and food festival added to the fun.

HIMACHAL TOURISM CONCLAVE (10-12 December 2004) Hotel Peterhof, Shimla: Encompassing a wide range of experiences, natural beauty and cultural diversity, Himachal Pradesh is a favoured destination for tourists, pilgrims, history lovers and adventure seekers. THIRUVANATHAPURAM to host global eco meet in 2005: The first-ever global meet on eco-friendly products to be held in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala in February has evoked tremendous response that is to be held between February 19 and 28. This will create awareness among people about the need for an eco-friendly approach in all developmental activities and lifestyle. The themes to be covered in the meet included eco-friendly lifestyles, non-conventional energy, sustainable agriculture, sustainable land use and waste management, water conservation, environment-friendly transportation, food, health and green pharmacy and eco-tourism.   TOP

BULLET TRAINS IN INDIA: As part of railways modernization, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad is expected to announce a policy envisaging introduction of bullet trains with a minimum speed of 250 km per hour. To begin with, bullet trains would be introduced on the 500-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor which will connect the two cities in less than two hours as against rive to six hours by the existing fastest train Shatabdi Express.

BOMBAY’S HAJI ALI SHRINE COMPLETES 800 YEARS: The shrine of the Muslim peer (saint) Haji Ali Bukhari stands in the middle of the sea near the Malabar hills. Legend has it that he was an Iranian merchant from Bukhara who had settled in India. He died in Iran but his coffin miraculously drifted all the way to Bombay to the spot where the mosque and tomb stand today. People of all faiths visit the shrine as supplicants requesting boons. Surprisingly, despite being surrounded by the sea the complex is never flooded. Recently the shrine completed 800 years of existence with thousands visiting the shrine in the hope of being healed and having wishes granted.

RAMLILA TO GET HERITAGE STATUS FROM UNESCO: Come Dussehra, (October) the festival of Ram’s victory over Ravana sees the epic Ramayan enacted in every village and city corner by amateur actors. The Ramlila will soon be declared a masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO. The Ramlila is basically the same, with some variations in that performed in Madhubani, Brindawan and Ayodhya with the grandest performed in Ramnagar. The Ramlila tradition is unique to India and as a “spectacle” it needs to be protected. Shades of the Ramayan/Ramlila also are alive in countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Bali and Indonesia, each with its own slant and nuance.

GOI ANNOUNCES DUAL CITIZENSHIP FEE: The government of India (GOI) has announced that the people of Indian origin (PIO) would have to pay Rs 12,500 to secure Indian overseas citizenship. The PIO will not be required to have a visa while visiting India and can also buy property and enjoy equality with non-resident Indians (NRIs) in economic, financial and educational fields besides having an overseas Indian passport. The facility for procuring dual citizenship has been extended to people of Indian origin living in Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US. 

INNOVATIONS BY THE INDIAN RAILWAYS: Railways will be selling non-prescription medicines, tooth brush, tooth paste, basic toiletries, tourist maps and travelers guide in important trains soon. Highlighting the achievements of Indian Railway Tourism and Catering Corporation (IRCTC), the Railway Minister stated that the recently introduced passenger ticket booking facility through internet and mobile phones have proved to be instant success. Indian Railways having world heritage sites like Darjeeling Hill Railways and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai has considerable untapped potential to boost tourism. Our luxury trains like Palace on Wheels and hill railways attract thousands of tourists every year from all over the world. The passenger amenities and punctuality of flagship trains like Rajdhani and Shatabadi is indeed praise-worthy.

BOMBAY’S ST. THOMAS CATHEDRAL AWARDED UNESCO’S ASIA PACIFIC HERITAGE PRIZE 2004: The Saint Thomas Cathedral in Bombay dates back to the early 18th century. This Anglican Church was built in 1718. It has an ornate interior and well-preserved stained glass windows. It’s old tombstones carry eloquent and poignant messages. Recently, it was selected by UNESCO for its Asia Pacific heritage conservation award for 2004.

“TOMBS OF JESUS AND MOSES” DRAW FOREIGN VISITORS TO KASHMIR: Foreign tourists particularly from Israel are visiting Kashmir in increasing numbers (1500 Israelis visited Kashmir in 2003 and 1623 in the first 8 months of 2004). The main attraction for them are 2 graves believed to be those of Jesus Christ and Moses. The tomb said to be of Jesus is in Rozabal in Srinagar and that of Moses near Bandipore in north Kashmir. The Takht-e-Suleman or Throne of Solomon, is on top of Shankracharya hill overlooking Srinagar’s Dal Lake. Ancestors of the people of Kashmir according to some, were one of the 10 lost tribes of Israel. Local legend has it that Jesus died in Srinagar while visiting the valley.

SECOND HOME FOR ASIATIC LIONS IN MADHYA PRADESH FORESTS SOON: About fifteen to twenty Asiatic Lions now living in the Gir National Park, Gujarat will be shifted to the Palpur Kino forest reserve in Morena – Sheopur close to Ranthambore and the Chambal reserve. With the threat of an epidemic looming large over the Gir Reserve, this measure has been taken to ensure the survival of the lions. The survey for the project will be completed by November with the project itself expected to be completed by 2010. Besides helping preserve the Asiatic Lion, tourism in the area will get a boost, as Ranthambore and Chambal reserves are close by.

India easeS visa rules for visiting Pakistani journalists, doctors, academics and elderly people: The measures were taken unilaterally to promote contact between Pakistani and Indian citizens. Multiple-entry visas have been brought in for journalists and academics with suitable accreditation or invitations. The new rules mean Pakistani visitors in the key categories will also be exempt from having to report regularly to the local police when in India. Visa rules will also be relaxed for medical doctors who may be accompanying patients for treatment at Indian hospitals.  Pakistani citizens above the age of 65 can also benefit from the new rules.  Pakistani nationals could also be permitted to visit up to 12 places during each visit, as opposed to the present three. India has said rules for issuing visas for participating in conferences will also be relaxed.

GEORGE ORWELL’S BIHAR HOUSE TO GET FACELIFT, COMMEMORATION PLANNED IN 2005: A group of Orwell fans have got together to renovate and preserve the house where Eric Blair, better known as George Orwell, was born. His house in Motihari, Bihar will be preserved. The well known author of “Animal Farm” and “1984” was born in Motihari, but few are aware of this. A year after the world celebrated his birth centenary in 2003 his fans are all set to remedy this. Besides renovating his home they have plans to organize a commemoration program there in January 2005 to coincide with his death anniversary.

KERALA TOURISM TO SHIFT FOCUS: Kerala’s USP of Beaches, backwaters and Ayurveda have been duplicated by neighboring countries like Sri Lanka. Kerala Tourism is hence in product differentiation mode. They plan to exploit the seasons with “Monsoon Magic” being promoted in the Middle East and Europe Ayurveda can be combined with this, as it is good for the body during the rains. Adventure Tourism will be promoted in Idukki, Wayanad and Munnar by way of water related activities like river rafting, canoeing and kayaking as well as rock climbing and paragliding. A Marina is planned for Cochin to take in 50 yachts of the rich and famous, by the end of the year. Wildlife conservation in Thekkady, Munnar and Adirapali is another attraction planned.

BOLLYWOOD TOUR: Actor Sunil Shetty’s company Popcorn Entertainment plans to attract tourists into tinsel town through its Bollywood tourism scheme. It has already launched this on a trial basis at $100 that includes a visit to the Filmistan Studio and a peek into post production work.  TOP

AISHWARYA RAI NOW A WAX MODEL AT MADAM TUSSAUDS LONDON: Well-known Indian actress Aishwarya Rai was recently listed as the “most beautiful woman in the world” by Time magazine. She has jointed the exclusive celebrity club at Madam Tussauds London with her wax model unveiled there on 1 October. She stands alongside the only other Indian actor in the famous wax museum, Amitabh Bachchan. The unveiling coincided with the release of her movie “Bride and Prejudice” based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, in London (directed by Gurinder Chadda of “Bend it like Beckham” fame).

MAURITIUS TO WITHDRAW VISA SYSTEM FOR INDIAN TOURISTS: Mauritius government has decided to do away with the visa system for the Indian tourists from October 1. They would only require a return ticket and sufficient funds to travel to Mauritius. Mauritius gets around 700000 tourists a year, out of which only 25000 are Indians. The step has been taken to increase the inflow of Indian tourists.

TRANSASIAN RAIL LINK ON THE ANVIL: Representatives of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Interaction for Multicultural Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries discussed the possibilities of a Trans Asian rail link from Vietnam to India via Thailand, Cambodia and Burma. Once this link is complete the second phase will start, linking India to Europe, via Pakistan, Iran, some Central Asian Republics and Turkey. When complete the train travel from Hanoi to London will cover over 13,000 km. This will give a fillip not only to trade but will help promote tourism. The project to be taken up initially is to lay the missing rail link of about 200 km, between Jiribam in Manipur and Kalay in Burma. This will act as a bridge between India and Burma making it easier to then connect to Southeast Asia and Asean.

NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER HONOURS INDIAN FILM STARS: On her visit to India the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Ms. Helen Clark, honoured Rakesh Roshan, the Director/Producer of “Kaho Na Pyaar Hai” for showcasing the beauty of New Zealand. The stars of the movie, Hrithik Roshan and Amisha Patel were also honoured. This film had helped increase tourism from India to New Zealand fourfold, she said. Christchurch and Queenstown are now visited by Indian tourists, thanks to this movie. Kaho Na Pyaar Hai was something of a trend setter with more than 60 film makers shooting their films in New Zealand after this.

MICHAEL JACKSON HIRES INDIAN CHEF FOR TOUR OF BRITAIN: Michael Jackson on a tour of England for his Charity “Heal the world” has hired an Indian chef from an Indian restaurant in Scotland to be his personal chef during the entire tour. Mr. Raj Bajwe, Manager Glasgow’s award – wining Cafe India will cook Jackson’s favorite vegetarian dishes, including his favorite saag (spinach) paneer (cottage cheese), pakoras, naan etc. The Kenya born Indian chef has cooked for Jackson once earlier in Los Angeles in 2000.

“GOOGLE” FOUNDERS IN INDIA, IMPRESSED WITH AUTORICKSHAW: The young duo of Sergey Brin and Larry Page, founders of the Google Internet search engine enjoyed their auto rickshaw ride to the Google office in Hyderabad and wanted to take one back. They were disappointed at not being able to locate any stray monkeys they had read were caged and relocated before the then US President Clinton’s visit to the city. They felt it was a shame California did not have buses operating on CNG like Delhi.

Golden Jubilee of Mt. Cho-Oyu PEAK celebrated IN NEPAL: Inspired by the grand success of the Mount Everest Golden Jubilee in May 2003, Nepal celebrated the 50th anniversary of Mount Cho-Oyu from October 17 to 19. More than 35 foreign delegates took part in this celebration function. Among them were the famous climbers of Mt. Cho Oyu Reinhold Messner, Peter Habeler, Dr. Heuberge Helmut, S. Joechler, H. Tichy of Austria and P. Dawa Lama of Nepal. Mt. Cho Oyu sits astride the border of Nepal and Tibet, about 20 miles west of Mount Everest. It is the sixth highest mountain in the world. Cho Oyu is translated in Tibetan as "the goddess of the turquoise." A famous trade route crossed Nangpa La pass, just west of Cho Oyu, and very close to the Advanced Base Camp. From Tibet, salt used to be brought over this pass to Namche Bazaar (Khumbu's commerce center) in exchange for grain from the south. Messner is the first person to have climbed all 14 eight thousand meters peaks of the world along with being the first to ascent Everest without oxygen. (Source: E Turbo News)

13 PART TV SERIAL ON INDIA TO WOO CHINESE TOURISTS: FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers and Commerce Industry) and a government backed Chinese broadcaster are joining hands to produce a TV serial on India’s tourist attractions. The Ministry of Tourism will also be one of the partners in the project. A Chinese production team will film India’s tourist and Buddhist sites with the program to be beamed in Mandarin to Chinese viewers. This initiative should help increase tourists from China to India. 10 million Chinese tourists went overseas last year but only 2000 came to India.   TOP

NATURE DOES MATTER

Redirecting Siberian Cranes: In a unique project proposed to 'guide' the Siberian Cranes back on to their migration routes to Bharatpur, a hang glider will pass the avian species, hoping that they will follow. The project, almost surreal in nature has been proposed by George Archibald, co-founder of the International Crane Foundation (ICF), inspired by Jeff Danie's movie Flyaway Home, where orphaned geese were seen flying behind his plane. The numbers of the Siberian Crane fell drastically from 600 in the 60s to a mere 76 in 1972. In 2000 only two of them were observed at the wetlands. Thereafter there has been no record at all. The depleting numbers can be attributed to crane hunting in Afghanistan and Pakistan.   (Source: Sanctuary Asia)

MIGRATORY BIRDS ARRIVE IN BHARATPUR SANCTUARY: Over 10 species of migratory birds have arrived, including Pintail, Shoveller, Garganey Teals, Ruffs and Riffs, Lesser White Throat, Common Cranes, and RedStart, among others. Also, the Demoiselle Cranes, which use Bharatpur as a transit camp before heading west towards Khirchan, have landed. One huge flock with over 600 birds. (Source: Delhi Bird Group)  TOP

PERMANENT FEATURE -  GOA

GOA IS A HOT FAVOURITE WITH RUSSIAN & BRITISH TOURISTS: The number of Russian tourists visiting to Goa has increased manifold. Goa has become a favourite holiday spot for travel savvy Russians and by the end of this year, about 40000 Russians would have visited the state, while last year this number was 25000. While Goa is voted the most popular destination by Mumbaikars, it is placed fourth among the top 10 destinations for 2004 bookings over the Christmas period for Britons (placed behind Barbados, Dubai & Orlando).  

SAMPARK KRANTI EXPRESS: Goa Sampark Kranti Express, a super fast train between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Madgaon, was introduced on October 23. The weekly train No. 2449 Up run on the Konkan Railway route every Thursday while on the reverse direction it plies every Saturday. The Sampark Kranti trains feature non-stop run beyond the state of origin to the national capital and dedicated staff throughout the journey.

TRAIN SERVICES RESUME: The services of train No.2051/2052 Dadar Terminus - Madgao Janashatabdi Express and Train No.2431/2432 Trivandrum Rajdhani Express on Konkan Railway route are being restored with immediate effect, Rajdhani from November 1 and Janashatabdi from November 4.

MERCEDES TAXI NOW AVAILABLE IN GOA: From 23 Oct, 2 luxury taxis are available in Goa, which has been a long standing demand. This will serve the purpose well especially during the IFFI (Flim Festival), weddings and conferences.

MANDO FESTIVAL COMPETITION: Goa Cultural and Social Centre will be organizing the 38th Mando festival competition of Mandos, Dulpods and Operatics on 26th November at Don Bosco Oratory Hall, Panaji.

SCHEDULE OF MASSES DURING "EXPOSITION": On the inaugural day November 21, the Pontifical Mass will be celebrated in the pandal at 9.30 am followed by carrying of the Relics to Cathedral where it will be kept for public veneration till Jan 1, 05. The pilgrims will be allowed to venerate the relics from 6 am till 7 pm. Masses in the pandal on Nov 22 and 23 will be in the morning from 6, 7, 8, 9.15 (English) and evening, 4, 5, 6 (English). Masses during the Novena days from Nov 24 to Dec 2 morning 6, 7.15, 8.15 (Novena Mass), 9.30, 10.30 (English), 11.30 (mass for the pilgrims) and evening 3.45, 5.15, 6.15 (English). KITE FESTIVAL (10 – 12 Dec’04): Goa kite carnival on the Miramar beach immediately takes over from the international film festival (IFFI) on December 10. Huge western kites made of rip-stop nylon and carbon graphite spars in all kinds of shapes and sizes and kites shaped like birds, bees, human forms and geometric designs in vibrant colours will fill up the Goan sky. After the 11-day IFFI from November 29 to December 9, the kite festival will screen films and present an array of aerial display of kite ballet, kite surfing and skating and fly stacks of kites with as many as 200 kites on a single line.   (Source: Herald)

LONGEST DANCE PARTY TO BE HELD IN GOA: Radisson White Sands Resort Goa announced that it would host `The World’s Longest Dance Party’ starting 29 Dec’04 that will go on till well over 65 hours non stop. The party plans to break the previous Guinness Record for 53 hours. It will take place at its Gravity Pool with world class DJs and approximately 50 dancers will be selected for the competition.    TOP
