NATURE DOES MATTER BACK ORISSA’S TIGERS NOW NUMBER 192: The population of tigers is on the rise in Orissa. They now number 192 of which 101 are Royal Bengal Tigers which have been sighted in the Similipal Tiger Reserve. The rise has been recorded in the last two biennial surveys. The Sunabeda Sanctuary under Bhawanipatna Circle, which shares a corridor with the neighboring state of Chatthisgarh, has shown a marked increase. The sharing of the corridor may have led to the increase by enlarging the tiger Habitat and allowing free movement of the animals. KAZIRANGA SANCTUARY TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS: Kaziranga National Park (KNP) of Assam, home of the famed one-horned Asiatic rhinoceros, is getting ready for its centennial next year. There were only 10 rhinos in Kaziranga Park in 1905 when the process of conservation started. Today the number has swelled to over 1600, an accomplishment that has earned KNP the World Wildlife Fund instituted ‘best managed park’ award. BACK |
