AIRLINES LAUNCHES DAILY CHENNAI AND MUMBAI FLIGHTS:
Kingfisher
Airlines recently announced the launch of its daily, return services between
Chennai and Delhi.
UB PICKS UP
26% IN AIR DECCAN: The United Breweries Group, which owns Kingfisher
Airlines, has acquired a 26% stake in Deccan Aviation Ltd. and will buy another
20% later. United Breweries would eventually control 46% of Deccan Aviation
after the deal is through.

FINALISE AIRBUS A-340-600 WITH AIRBUS AT PARIS AIR SHOW:
Kingfisher is finalizing a
new aircraft order, the jumbo A-340-600s, with European manufacturer Airbus
Industrie, which is likely to be announced at the Paris Air Show this month. A
second order for another wide bodied aircraft is also likely.

CAMERAS ON KINGFISHER FLIGHTS:
Kingfisher Airlines will install landscape cameras on all its airbus aircraft,
as a special feature, to enable travelers view the scenery on the ground. Two
cameras near the nose-landing gear will enable the guests to watch the landscape
the aircraft flies over. This service, available only in some international
airlines, is being introduced for the first time in the domestic sector.

NEW HUB IN BRUSSELS:
Unveiling its plans for a
newly created hub in Brussels earlier this month, Jet Airways has announced that
it would operate five flights from India to the Belgian capital and provide
seamless connections for onward journeys to the United States and Canada. The
hub would also give the airline access to entire Europe as well. It has the
distinction of being the only Indian carrier to create a hub on foreign soil.

FLIGHTS VIA BRUSSELS IN AUGUST:
Jet Airways commences its Mumbai - New York flights via Brussels from August 5th.
Also on schedule are four more flights from Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and
Ahmedabad to connect New York, Chicago, Toronto and Los Angeles by next summer.
Besides these, Jet Airways will also launch a flight to San Francisco via
Shanghai and is currently finalizing a code share deal with Qantas to carry
passengers to Australia via Singapore.

AIR DECCAN: Air
Deccan recently flagged off its daily flight from Delhi to Leh, the capital of
Ladakh. A 180-seater Airbus A320 has been deployed on this route. With this
launch, Air Deccan becomes the first low cost carrier to fly to the highest
airport in the country.
INDIGO ADDS
AGARTALA AS ITS 14TH DESTINATION:
IndiGo will connect Agartala to Kolkata and onward to Hyderabad and
Bangalore on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with its ninth
brand-new Airbus A320. The airline currently operates 58 daily flights with a
fleet of nine brand new A320 aircraft.
NEW LOOK PLANNED
FOR THE MERGED NATIONAL AIRLINES:
Once the mergers
are final, the new national airline will be called “Air India”. The
Maharaja will be retained as its mascot, while the logo will be a flying swan
with the Konark Chakra placed inside it. This will be prominently displayed on
the tail wing and each of the engines. The aircraft will be ivory in colour, but
the base will retain the red streak of Air India. Running parallel to each other
orange and red speed lines will mark the trail from the front door to the back
with ‘Air India’ running across the tail of the aircraft.
QANTAS AND
JET AIRWAYS SIGN CODE SHARE AGREEMENT:
Qantas recently
announced the signing of a code share agreement with Jet Airways. As per the
agreement all the passengers flying to Australia via Delhi would fly on board
Jet Airways up to Singapore and then fly Qantas from there.

ALLOWED EXTRA BAGGAGE ON BRITISH AIRWAYS: Students
flying on British Airways between June 1 and October 31 are being allowed an
extra bag weighing up to 23 kg. However, tickets need to be purchased before

Jet Star Airlines and its competitor Virgin Blue Airlines plan to fly to India
by 2008. Virgin Blue has its eyes set on Mumbai and Bangalore. Jet Star on the
other hand is looking at other sectors.

INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES TO REVIVE DELHI OPERATIONS: Swiss
international Airlines will revive its Delhi operations from November 25, 2007,
with daily flights in the sector. The airline will deploy Airbus A330 on this
route with a two-class configuration—48 business and 180 economy seats.

STARTS FLIGHT FROM BANGKOK TO BANGALORE:
Thailand-based low-fare airline Nok Air commenced its first international flight
from Bangkok to Bangalore on June 1. The airline also plans to launch daily
flights from Hyderabad, Madras and Delhi to Bangkok soon.

Southern Airlines will be commencing operations on the Delhi - Guangzhou route

AIR COMMENCES FLIGHTS TO LUCKNOW:
Oman Air has started three flights a week from Muscat to Lucknow and back from
3rd May. These will be increased to four from June. Lucknow is the seventh
destination of the carrier in India after Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Cochin,
Hyderabad and Trivandrum. Oman Air is the first Gulf carrier to operate to
Lucknow.

Nakheel, the

international hotel in Dubai. 'The Grand Fort Dubai' will be built at an
elevated position in Jebel Ali, New Dubai. The 244-room super luxury resort,

brand, Homewood Suites by Hilton. The first Hilton Garden Inn Hotel in Saket,
New Delhi is likely to open in 2008.

BUDDHIST TOURISM
IN THE KASHMIR VALLEY:
Taking its cue from the Central Government’s “Come to India - Walk with the
Buddha”, Kashmir plans to revamp the Buddhist legacy of its valley. The idea is
to develop a Buddhist circuit in Kashmir and include in one of the existing
circuits in the country and to also restore the historically rich, centuries old
Buddhist monasteries in Harwan, Srinagar and Ushkura in Baramullah.

TEMPLE CAR FESTIVAL ON MAY 14:
Thousands of devotees congregated at the historic Sri Ranganatha Swamy
Temple to participate in the annual ‘Chithirai Therottam’ (Temple Car
Festival). Devotees pulled the decorated temple car on which the idols of Lord
Namperumal and consort Ubhaya Nachiyar were mounted. It was then taken around
the four temple streets (Chithirai Veedhis) amidst chants.
BADRINATH SHRINE
REOPENS FOR PILGRIMS:
The head priest of Badrinath opened portals of the
famous shrine during the Brahm Muhurat on 1 May amid chanting of Vedic
hymns and music played by the Garwhal Rifles. With the reopening of Badrinath
Shrine, the Char Dham Yatra has begun in the Devbhumi of
Uttarakhand. Kedarnath Shrine reopened on 30 April while Gangotri
and Yamunotri reopened in mid April.
MONASTERIES LIT UP
ON BUDDHA PURNIMA: Monasteries were adorned with lights and echoed soulful chants during
Buddha Purnima on May 1. Buddha Puranima celebrates the birth of Lord
Buddha. It is also believed that Lord Buddha attained enlightenment and
breathed his last or attained Nirvana on this day. Though all Purnimas
are auspicious, Buddha Purnima’s special significance lies in this unique
coincidence.

Every year the
sleepy town of Villupuram comes alive during the week before Chitra Poornam
(2 May this year) drawing crowds of transgenders, cross dressers,

at Koovagam. This year a large number of Europeans and Americans also
participated in the festival.

BROAD GAUGE RAIL COACH RESTAURANT IN BHOPAL:
Recently was inaugurated a restaurant – probably the first of its kind, at the
hotel Lake View Ashok hotel in Bhopal. It has been made using a second class
broad gauge coach procured from the West Central Railways. A railway signal has
also been installed and will indicate whether the restaurant is closed or open.
The `platform’ is replete with benches, clock, lanterns, etc.

With a view to
promoting Khadi internationally, Rajasthan is planning to hold a Khadi
exhibition in New York soon. This comes on the heels of the project “Fashion for

Heritage coaches of The Royal Time Machine will soon be plying on Delhi’s roads.
The idea is to take the traveler back in time to the grandeur of the Rajputs and

paintings, silken cushions and ornate artifacts. Even the staff is outfitted in
traditional attire. Travelers can watch a half-hour film on the kings who ruled
the “City of Djinns”. The vehicles have been specially designed to give a

For jungle buffs not willing to rough it out, the Vidarbha Queen, an
air-conditioned narrow gauge train to the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in

safari train, the Vidarbha Queen has ten luxury carriages and will make the 120
km run from Nagpur to Nagbhid, right to the doorstep of the Tiger Reserve (TATR),

(EARLIER PONDICHERRY) PLANS A REPLICA OF EIFFEL TOWER:
On the other hand in a bid to retain its French connection and legacy, The
Pondicherry (now called Puducherry) government is planning to construct a
massive replica of the Eiffel Tower at Yanam, the territory’s enclave in Andhra
Pradesh (about 900 km/560 miles from Pondicherry). The replica will be 100m tall
and will weigh several tonnes.

ROHTANG PASS OPENED ON MAY 10:
The snow-covered Rohtang Pass
in Himachal Pradesh’s scenic Kullu Valley was thrown open to traffic on May 10
after remaining closed for over six months. The pass, located 55 km from the
popular resort town of Manali (and 325 km from Shimla), is a popular destination
for holiday- makers who throng the area in summer.

IN MUMBAI TO BE CONVERTED INTO FLIGHT SCHOOL: United Breweries is planning to close down UB’s brewery in
Bombay and convert it into an aviation university, to cater to the growing
talent requirements of Kingfisher Airlines. The University will have simulators
and other training facilities for ATR and Airbus pilots. Dr. Vijay Mallya
recently inaugurated a Kingfisher Training Academy in Mumbai. The academy will
fine-tune skills of already trained professionals.

OLD PRATAP SINGH MUSEUM ON UNESCO WATCH LIST:
The 109-year-old
Sri Pratap Singh Museum situated along the banks of Jhelum in Srinagar has been
placed on the UNESCO watch list. This implies the museum will now be promoted as
a repository of rich cultural heritage as per a program sponsored by the United
Nations agency for preservation of world heritage towards enhancing protection
of movable cultural property under the UN Charter. This is one of the oldest
museums of Kashmir and the largest in north India.
DARJEELING TEA ACCORDED
GEOGRAPHIC INDICATION MARK: Darjeeling’s brand equity has gone up
several notches after its tea has been accorded the international GI (geographic
indication) mark just like Champagne, Bordeaux and Tequila, which means its
special qualities cannot be replicated or imitated. Gardens like Glenburn Tea
Estate are organising helicopter charters “on request”. Tours involve plantation

Dried grass made
from the stem of Khus Khus, which turns yellow and gold in colour, has been

Thanks to the
installation of a cell phone jammer, for the first time in a temple in Tamil
Nadu, devotees can now pray in peace without any disturbance from ringing
mobiles. The jammer is equipped to bar incoming and outgoing calls within a
radius of 20 meters of the temple.

VISITORS:
Visitors to the Taj Mahal
will not have to burn their feet any more in the scorching heat with the
authorities deciding to implant heat resistant tiles on the route to the main
building of the monument. These special tiles will be 48 feet long.

INDIA GIVES GODDESS DURGA A GRAND FAREWELL IN SYDNEY: Artisans specially flown in from Bengal constructed a huge statue of
Goddess Durga at an Art Gallery in Sydney. The Goddess was then taken in a
farewell procession, in a beautifully decorated float, accompanied by dancers
and musicians, through the city centre to be immersed in the Parramatta River.

ELEPHANT VILLAGE:
Elephants in
Jaipur will now have an exclusive village to themselves, which is being
developed on the outskirts of the city. The village, which is expected to
house a herd of more than 100 elephants with their keepers, will be a
tourist attraction by itself. The project will include a natural habitat
shelter with extensive plantations and a veterinary hospital. A tourist
centre will also be constructed just outside this village to enable visitors
to have a glimpse of these mammoths in their natural habitat.
CROCODILE NESTING
SITES SPOTTED IN ORISSA: Over 50 crocodile nesting sites have been spotted in
Orissa’s Bhitarkanika National park, home to the largest population of giant
salt-water crocodiles in India. Following this the government has imposed a five
months ban on tourist entry to the park during the breeding and nesting period,
as crocodiles get more aggressive during this season.
