AIRLINES UPDATE

 

KINGFISHER AIRLINES LAUNCHES DAILY CHENNAI AND MUMBAI FLIGHTS: Kingfisher Airlines recently announced the launch of its daily, return services between Chennai and Delhi.

 

UB PICKS UP 26% IN AIR DECCAN: The United Breweries Group, which owns Kingfisher Airlines, has acquired a 26% stake in Deccan Aviation Ltd. and will buy another 20% later.  United Breweries would eventually control 46% of Deccan Aviation after the deal is through.

 

KINGFISHER TO FINALISE AIRBUS A-340-600 WITH AIRBUS AT PARIS AIR SHOW: Kingfisher is finalizing a new aircraft order, the jumbo A-340-600s, with European manufacturer Airbus Industrie, which is likely to be announced at the Paris Air Show this month.  A second order for another wide bodied aircraft is also likely.

 

LANDSCAPE CAMERAS ON KINGFISHER FLIGHTS: Kingfisher Airlines will install landscape cameras on all its airbus aircraft, as a special feature, to enable travelers view the scenery on the ground. Two cameras near the nose-landing gear will enable the guests to watch the landscape the aircraft flies over. This service, available only in some international airlines, is being introduced for the first time in the domestic sector.

 

JET AIRWAYS’ NEW HUB IN BRUSSELS: Unveiling its plans for a newly created hub in Brussels earlier this month, Jet Airways has announced that it would operate five flights from India to the Belgian capital and provide seamless connections for onward journeys to the United States and Canada.  The hub would also give the airline access to entire Europe as well. It has the distinction of being the only Indian carrier to create a hub on foreign soil.

 

JET AIRWAYS FLIGHTS VIA BRUSSELS IN AUGUST:  Jet Airways commences its Mumbai - New York flights via Brussels from August 5th.  Also on schedule are four more flights from Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad to connect New York, Chicago, Toronto and Los Angeles by next summer. Besides these, Jet Airways will also launch a flight to San Francisco via Shanghai and is currently finalizing a code share deal with Qantas to carry passengers to Australia via Singapore.

 

LEH WELCOMES AIR DECCAN: Air Deccan recently flagged off its daily flight from Delhi to Leh, the capital of Ladakh. A 180-seater Airbus A320 has been deployed on this route. With this launch, Air Deccan becomes the first low cost carrier to fly to the highest airport in the country.

 

INDIGO ADDS AGARTALA AS ITS 14TH DESTINATION: IndiGo will connect Agartala to Kolkata and onward to Hyderabad and Bangalore on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with its ninth brand-new Airbus A320. The airline currently operates 58 daily flights with a fleet of nine brand new A320 aircraft.

NEW LOOK PLANNED FOR THE MERGED NATIONAL AIRLINES: Once the mergers are final, the new national airline will be called “Air India”. The Maharaja will be retained as its mascot, while the logo will be a flying swan with the Konark Chakra placed inside it. This will be prominently displayed on the tail wing and each of the engines. The aircraft will be ivory in colour, but the base will retain the red streak of Air India. Running parallel to each other orange and red speed lines will mark the trail from the front door to the back with ‘Air India’ running across the tail of the aircraft.

QANTAS AND JET AIRWAYS SIGN CODE SHARE AGREEMENT: Qantas recently announced the signing of a code share agreement with Jet Airways. As per the agreement all the passengers flying to Australia via Delhi would fly on board Jet Airways up to Singapore and then fly Qantas from there.

 

STUDENTS ALLOWED EXTRA BAGGAGE ON BRITISH AIRWAYS: Students flying on British Airways between June 1 and October 31 are being allowed an extra bag weighing up to 23 kg.  However, tickets need to be purchased before end September. Another promotional scheme allows the students to win prizes and complimentary tickets to the UK by logging on to www.bapromo.co.in

  

AUSTRALIA'S VIRGIN BLUE AIRLINES AND JET STAR PLAN TO COME TO INDIA: Jet Star Airlines and its competitor Virgin Blue Airlines plan to fly to India by 2008. Virgin Blue has its eyes set on Mumbai and Bangalore. Jet Star on the other hand is looking at other sectors.

 

SWISS INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES TO REVIVE DELHI OPERATIONS: Swiss international Airlines will revive its Delhi operations from November 25, 2007, with daily flights in the sector. The airline will deploy Airbus A330 on this route with a two-class configuration—48 business and 180 economy seats.

 

NOK AIR STARTS FLIGHT FROM BANGKOK TO BANGALORE: Thailand-based low-fare airline Nok Air commenced its first international flight from Bangkok to Bangalore on June 1. The airline also plans to launch daily flights from Hyderabad, Madras and Delhi to Bangkok soon.

 

NOW FLY DELHI GUANGZHOU ON CHINA SOUTHERN AIRLINES: China Southern Airlines will be commencing operations on the Delhi - Guangzhou route from September 9, 2007. The airline will be initially using B-757 aircraft for this new sector but would switch to A330 in due course.

 

AUSTRIAN ANNOUNCES REWARDS FOR ITS BOARDING CARD HOLDERS: Austrian Airlines’ passengers can now use their boarding card to enjoy a range of benefits. As per the initiative, Austrian has decided to offer its guests discounted or free entrance to a range of exciting cultural events and institutions when they present their boarding card and official photo ID.

 

OMAN AIR COMMENCES FLIGHTS TO LUCKNOW: Oman Air has started three flights a week from Muscat to Lucknow and back from 3rd May. These will be increased to four from June. Lucknow is the seventh destination of the carrier in India after Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Cochin, Hyderabad and Trivandrum. Oman Air is the first Gulf carrier to operate to Lucknow. TOP

OBEROI GROUP AMONG TOP 10 HOTEL CHAINS: Oberoi Hotels and Resorts are now listed among the world's top 10, according to a latest Zegat survey. The Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, owns and manages luxury hotels in India, Egypt, Indonesia, Mauritius and Saudi Arabia.

LEELA ESTABLISHES ITS PRESENCE IN SOUTH DELHI:  With a strategic location on Vinay Marg, The Leela Kempenski Group plans to develop a 240-roomed ‘Iconic’ Hotel, superlative in both architectural design and interiors to cater to the most discerning guests visiting or traversing through the capital.

SELECTED HOME STAYS & BUNGALOWS UNDER GREEN APPLE BRANDING:  Marvel Tours, Kerala has introduced several home stays and bungalows under their Green Apple brand. SANT CHATWAL’S HAUTEL COUTURE ‘DREAM’ COMES TO INDIA:  Sant Singh Chatwal’s Hampshire Hotels and Resorts is going ahead with plans to set up as many as seven ‘hautel couture’ range of hotels in India to be christened ‘Dream’ as well as a 7 star property.  Land for these have already been acquired in Bangalore, Kochi, Noida and Hyderabad, Cochin, Chennai, and Mumbai.  The first of its hotels is likely to open in Hyderabad later this year. The famed Deepak Chopra Ayurvedic Health Spas will be an added feature of these boutique hotels.

NAKHEEL AND BHARAT HOTELS ANNOUNCE JOINT HOTEL VENTURE IN DUBAI: Nakheel, the world's largest real estate developer, and Bharat Hotels, owners of 'The Grand' group of hotels, have announced a joint venture to develop their first international hotel in Dubai. 'The Grand Fort Dubai' will be built at an elevated position in Jebel Ali, New Dubai. The 244-room super luxury resort, expected to commence operations in 2009, will be modeled on the majestic forts of Rajasthan.

TAMANI HOTELS & RESORTS TO STEP INTO INDIA: With plans to open 10 hotels in India in the near future, the group is looking at avenues in Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Noida, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. These would be in the 4-star category. In addition to hotels, the group would also look into opening townships and villas.

DLF AND HILTON HOTELS ANNOUNCE THE FIRST 10 OF THEIR 75 JV PROJECTS: Hilton Hotels Corporation has announced that its joint venture company with DLF plans to develop 10 (to be increased to 75) hotel projects in India, under the full service Hilton brand, business hotel brand, Hilton Garden Inn and long stay brand, Homewood Suites by Hilton. The first Hilton Garden Inn Hotel in Saket, New Delhi is likely to open in 2008.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL PLANNING AN INDIAN FORAY: The award-winning five star hotel chain, Mandarin Oriental is now looking to open a property in India. Though an initial venture is planned in one of the major metros, plans for a villa resort on the beach are on the anvil too. TOP

BUDDHIST TOURISM IN THE KASHMIR VALLEY: Taking its cue from the Central Government’s “Come to India - Walk with the Buddha”, Kashmir plans to revamp the Buddhist legacy of its valley. The idea is to develop a Buddhist circuit in Kashmir and include in one of the existing circuits in the country and to also restore the historically rich, centuries old Buddhist monasteries in Harwan, Srinagar and Ushkura in Baramullah.

KERALA CELEBRATES TEMPLE CAR FESTIVAL ON MAY 14: Thousands of devotees congregated at the historic Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple to participate in the annual ‘Chithirai Therottam’ (Temple Car Festival). Devotees pulled the decorated temple car on which the idols of Lord Namperumal and consort Ubhaya Nachiyar were mounted. It was then taken around the four temple streets (Chithirai Veedhis) amidst chants.

BADRINATH SHRINE REOPENS FOR PILGRIMS:  The head priest of Badrinath opened portals of the famous shrine during the Brahm Muhurat on 1 May amid chanting of Vedic hymns and music played by the Garwhal Rifles. With the reopening of Badrinath Shrine, the Char Dham Yatra has begun in the Devbhumi of Uttarakhand. Kedarnath Shrine reopened on 30 April while Gangotri and Yamunotri reopened in mid April.

MONASTERIES LIT UP ON BUDDHA PURNIMA: Monasteries were adorned with lights and echoed soulful chants during Buddha Purnima on May 1. Buddha Puranima celebrates the birth of Lord Buddha. It is also believed that Lord Buddha attained enlightenment and breathed his last or attained Nirvana on this day. Though all Purnimas are auspicious, Buddha Purnima’s special significance lies in this unique coincidence.

TRANSGENDERS THE WORLD OVER CONGREGATE AT VILLUPURAM: Every year the sleepy town of Villupuram comes alive during the week before Chitra Poornam (2 May this year) drawing crowds of transgenders, cross dressers, transvestites and homosexuals for the annual festival of the Koothandavar temple at Koovagam. This year a large number of Europeans and Americans also participated in the festival. TOP

WORLD’S FIRST BROAD GAUGE RAIL COACH RESTAURANT IN BHOPAL Recently was inaugurated a restaurant – probably the first of its kind, at the hotel Lake View Ashok hotel in Bhopal. It has been made using a second class broad gauge coach procured from the West Central Railways. A railway signal has also been installed and will indicate whether the restaurant is closed or open. The `platform’ is replete with benches, clock, lanterns, etc.

KHADI EXHIBITION IN THE UNITED STATESWith a view to promoting Khadi internationally, Rajasthan is planning to hold a Khadi exhibition in New York soon. This comes on the heels of the project “Fashion for Development” to popularize Khadi which was unveiled a few months ago.  The aim is to make khadi globally popular, keeping in mind contemporary fashions, and to boost to the khadi industry.

WONDER-KID LEADS “AIMING FOR OLYMPICS” MARATHON WALK: Child prodigy Budhia Singh led a 500 km marathon walk on June 6 from Bhubaneshwar to Kolkata to create mass awareness for sports and games with the slogan “aiming for Olympics”.

MAKE OVER FOR DILLI HAAT: Dilli Haat, the capital’s unique market for crafts from across the country, is about to get a long needed makeover. New services will be added. ATM counters will be opened. A courier counter for shoppers to buy gifts and dispatch them to their friends anywhere across the globe is also planned. An art gallery, better seating space and a new look for the food plazas are also promised under the new plan.

 

LUXURY HERITAGE COACH FOR DELHI VISITORS: Heritage coaches of The Royal Time Machine will soon be plying on Delhi’s roads. The idea is to take the traveler back in time to the grandeur of the Rajputs and the Mughals. The interiors are lined with sequined wall hangings and miniature paintings, silken cushions and ornate artifacts. Even the staff is outfitted in traditional attire. Travelers can watch a half-hour film on the kings who ruled the “City of Djinns”. The vehicles have been specially designed to give a lounge-line feel and are replete with a bar, kitchenette and a restroom. The morning tour covers the Red Fort, Safdarjung’s Tomb, and the Lodhi Gardens. The evening trip, which begins at 3 pm, has the Humayun’s Tomb, Lotus Temple and the Qutub Minar on the itinerary.

NOW FIVE STAR COMFORT ON A JUNGLE SAFARI TRAIN:  For jungle buffs not willing to rough it out, the Vidarbha Queen, an air-conditioned narrow gauge train to the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district is just the thing. Billed as the country’s first jungle safari train, the Vidarbha Queen has ten luxury carriages and will make the 120 km run from Nagpur to Nagbhid, right to the doorstep of the Tiger Reserve (TATR), Maharashtra. It has six AC saloons and one non-AC saloon, a pantry car, and two guard’s cabins, all furbished with five-star interiors.

NOW TAKE A HELICOPTER TO THE SHRINES OF KEDARNATH AND HEMKUND: Visitors to the holy shrines of Shree Kedarnath Dham and Shree Hemkund Sahib, Dehradun can now avail of helicopter services launched by Prabhatam Aviation. 

 

REPLICA OF COVENT GARDEN IN JAIPUR: The desert state has plans to redevelop its heritage properties, and particularly, Jaipur into a leisure and retail centre.  A replica of the famed Covent Gardens in London will soon be set up in the Pink City, Jaipur.

 

PUDUCHERRY (EARLIER  PONDICHERRY) PLANS A REPLICA OF EIFFEL TOWER: On the other hand in a bid to retain its French connection and legacy, The Pondicherry (now called Puducherry) government is planning to construct a massive replica of the Eiffel Tower at Yanam, the territory’s enclave in Andhra Pradesh (about 900 km/560 miles from Pondicherry). The replica will be 100m tall and will weigh several tonnes.

SCENIC ROHTANG PASS OPENED ON MAY 10: The snow-covered Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh’s scenic Kullu Valley was thrown open to traffic on May 10 after remaining closed for over six months. The pass, located 55 km from the popular resort town of Manali (and 325 km from Shimla), is a popular destination for holiday- makers who throng the area in summer.

UB’S BREWERY IN MUMBAI TO BE CONVERTED INTO FLIGHT SCHOOL: United Breweries is planning to close down UB’s brewery in Bombay and convert it into an aviation university, to cater to the growing talent requirements of Kingfisher Airlines. The University will have simulators and other training facilities for ATR and Airbus pilots. Dr. Vijay Mallya recently inaugurated a Kingfisher Training Academy in Mumbai. The academy will fine-tune skills of already trained professionals.

 

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, RIPLEY'S IN BANGALORE: Ripley's Entertainment Inc. announced a tie up with Innovative Studios Pvt. Ltd. Bangalore to showcase collections from Ripley's Believe It or Not, Guinness World Records Museum and Louis Tussaud's Wax Museum in India. Exhibits will be displayed at the Innovative Film City here, which is expected to be thrown open to the public by this year end.

 

INDIA TOURISM SHOWS IN LONDON AND NEW YORK: India plans to hold two mega shows in London and New York in September this year showcasing its rich culture and tourism potential as part of celebrations to mark India’s 60 years of Independence.

FIVE PORTS TO BE DEVELOPED AS CRUISE TOURISM HUBS: With a view to encouraging high-end tourism in the country, the government has identified five ports viz. Mumbai, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Kochi in the West and Tuticorin in the East to be developed as cruise tourism hubs. Star Cruises and Indian Ocean Cruises as well as several international names have evinced an interest in the venture.

COCHIN TO BE A STOP OVER FOR WORLD’S PREMIERE VOLVO OCEAN RACE: Volvo Ocean Race, the world's premier offshore ocean marathon, has plans to bring its 2008-09 event to India. Cochin Port will be the likely stopover on the new race route through West Asia and Asia. The race starts in Alicante, Spain, in mid-October 2008.

KASHMIR’S 109 YEAR OLD PRATAP SINGH MUSEUM ON UNESCO WATCH LIST: The 109-year-old Sri Pratap Singh Museum situated along the banks of Jhelum in Srinagar has been placed on the UNESCO watch list. This implies the museum will now be promoted as a repository of rich cultural heritage as per a program sponsored by the United Nations agency for preservation of world heritage towards enhancing protection of movable cultural property under the UN Charter. This is one of the oldest museums of Kashmir and the largest in north India.

DARJEELING TEA ACCORDED GEOGRAPHIC INDICATION MARK: Darjeeling’s brand equity has gone up several notches after its tea has been accorded the international GI (geographic indication) mark just like Champagne, Bordeaux and Tequila, which means its special qualities cannot be replicated or imitated. Gardens like Glenburn Tea Estate are organising helicopter charters “on request”. Tours involve plantation and factory visits and tea tasting. ‘Darjeeling tea’ will now be called “Darjeeling”.

GOLDEN GRASS HANDICRAFTS OF ORISSA: Dried grass made from the stem of Khus Khus, which turns yellow and gold in colour, has been innovatively used to create decorative and daily household items by a group of Oriya women.  Gaining popularity in their State, these items are now fast catching on in other places as well.

PRAY IN PEACE:  Thanks to the installation of a cell phone jammer, for the first time in a temple in Tamil Nadu, devotees can now pray in peace without any disturbance from ringing mobiles. The jammer is equipped to bar incoming and outgoing calls within a radius of 20 meters of the temple. 

COOL FEET FOR TAJ VISITORS: Visitors to the Taj Mahal will not have to burn their feet any more in the scorching heat with the authorities deciding to implant heat resistant tiles on the route to the main building of the monument. These special tiles will be 48 feet long.

HOLLYWOOD’S ARMOUR MADE IN INDIA: Orlando Bloom and his Knights Templar fought a winning battle in ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. However, what the Hollywood’s Knights Templar did not know was that their mail and caps, which formed part of their armour, were made in India at Ghaziabad. TOP

INCREDIBLE INDIA GIVES GODDESS DURGA A GRAND FAREWELL IN SYDNEY: Artisans specially flown in from Bengal constructed a huge statue of Goddess Durga at an Art Gallery in Sydney. The Goddess was then taken in a farewell procession, in a beautifully decorated float, accompanied by dancers and musicians, through the city centre to be immersed in the Parramatta River.  A bus, covered with the Incredible India message, led the party. A stop at Darling Harbour and another at Parramatta Park attracted huge crowds who participated in the merriment.

AEROSMITH ROCKS BANGALORE: One of the greatest US rock and roll bands – Aerosmith enthralled fans who packed the Bangalore Palace Grounds to hear them play on June 2.  This was their first concert in India held under the banner of “Bad Boys from Boston’.

‘THE WHISPERERS’ BAGS HOUSTON FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS:  Rajiv Virani’s ‘The Whisperer’s’ bagged two major awards at the 40th World Fest Houston International Film Festival. This Fest plays host to documentaries and feature films from the world over.

WORLD FUTURE COUNCIL HAS VANDANA SHIV ON COMMITTEE: Renowned Indian environment campaigner, Vandana Shiva, has been elected as member to the World Future Council, a new body aiming to provide an ethical voice for the needs and rights of future life.

JAY GOYAL WINS OHIO “YOUNG DEMOCRAT OF THE YEAR AWARD”: A 27-year old Indian American lawmaker has won the prestigious ‘Young Democrat of the Year” Award at the hands of the Ohio Governor at a glittering function held there recently.  This award comes on the heels of another award he picked up recently “The Richland County Democrat of the Year Award”.  Jay Goyal is currently the youngest member of the Ohio General Assembly. M VIJAYALAKSHMI – ICON IN INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC:  A visual impairment notwithstanding, this beautifully gifted artiste plays the Gayatri Veena (a modified version of the regular Veena) with great sensitivity and maturity distinguishing herself at various National and International concerts. Practicing on the Veena since the age of 5, this young lady has emerged as an icon in her hometown Vaikom, Kerala.  Apart from her own compositions, she claims to know 500 raagas and has an uncanny knack to pick up and reproduce a tune by just listening to it.

 

HYDERABAD LAD CREATES HISTORY ON EVEREST: 27 year old Bachinepally Shekhar Babu, of Andhra Pradesh, created history this June by summiting Mt. Everest as an individual and not part of any organized or government expedition.  He is the first Indian to earn this distinction. He managed this in his third trial. TOP

 

NATURE DOES MATTER

ELEPHANT VILLAGE: Elephants in Jaipur will now have an exclusive village to themselves, which is being developed on the outskirts of the city. The village, which is expected to house a herd of more than 100 elephants with their keepers, will be a tourist attraction by itself. The project will include a natural habitat shelter with extensive plantations and a veterinary hospital.  A tourist centre will also be constructed just outside this village to enable visitors to have a glimpse of these mammoths in their natural habitat.

CROCODILE NESTING SITES SPOTTED IN ORISSA: Over 50 crocodile nesting sites have been spotted in Orissa’s Bhitarkanika National park, home to the largest population of giant salt-water crocodiles in India. Following this the government has imposed a five months ban on tourist entry to the park during the breeding and nesting period, as crocodiles get more aggressive during this season. TOP

GTDC’s SUMMER ESCAPADE IN GOA MAY 18: The Summer Escapade Festival at Calangute organized by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation took off to a great start on May 18, drawing both locals and tourists to its venue. Foods courts, popular bands, salsa dancers, a beauty pageant and a host of other activities kept the audiences entertained.

RADIO MIRCHI SPICES UP GOA: Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM went on air in Goa for the first time on May 23. Goa’s renowned music composer /singer will host a special weekend show “Remo’s Susegad Sundays” which will be aired between 1 to 2 pm every Sunday.

BIG FM 92.7 ON GOA AIRWAVES TOO:  Goa is witnessing a boom on the air waves with Big 92.7 joining the league of FM channels on May 28.  The new FM channel is the 18th station of its network in the country.
