billion in 2005. This is equal to a third of total worldwide annual aircraft
sales and will be the largest ever purchase order for aircraft by India in any
financial year. Each aircraft costs between $44 million and $75 million.
The orders will catapult
India to the third place, after the US and China, in the pecking order of
countries that order the maximum aircraft every year. China alone will be
inducting 147 aircraft into its fleet this year.

SINGAPORE Airline keen to fly Big Bird to India:
The airline scheduled to
be the first airline in the world to fly the Airbus A380, is interested in being
the first to bring the Big Bird to India too, provided the metro airports come
up with the necessary infrastructure. The airline recognizes that some segments
of the India-Singapore sector are high-density routes ideal for deployment of
the world’s largest aircraft. SIA is expected to take the first delivery of the
first A380 next year and has chosen the London-Singapore sector as the first
route.
Jet AIRWAYS, AIR Sahara get 9 flights to UK:
The government on 1st
February allotted a total of nine flights to the UK to Jet Airways and Air
Sahara for the coming summer schedule starting March-end. While Jet Airways has
been allotted seven flights to London Heathrow per week, Air Sahara has been
allotted two to Gatwick. Both the private carriers have already got landing
slots in the UK, Air-India, which already operates 18 services to the UK and had
applied for additional flights, has got three flights to Birmingham and three
more to London, provided it could manage to get three additional slots to
Heathrow. If Air-India could not get the additional slot by February 15, three
flights would come back to the common pool and could be allocated to the two
private carriers.

Jet Airways gets nod to fly to US:
The airline is set to
become the first Indian private sector airline to operate between India and the
US from this summer. The airline has been given official permission to operate a
three-times-a-week service on the India-Brussels-New York sector. although the
airline had applied for
permission to operate a
daily service on the route, it was not given, as there are restrictions on the
number of flights that can be operated on the India-Brussels route. While there
is a cap of three flights a week on the India-US sector, Brussels and the US
follow an open-sky policy, which allows airlines to operate as many flights as
they desire between the two countries

UK OPERATION MAY BE DELAYED:
CNBC-TV18 reports that
Jet Airways and Air
Sahara
are expected to begin their flights to London some time in September. While Jet

reason being, that the airlines do not have their fleet in place to fly
overseas. While they would ideally like to fly the 737's on this sector, there
are no aircraft available in the market currently.

distance. You see the remnants of a stone house close to the Shore temple (a
World Heritage monument), and a half completed rock elephant and 2 lions, one of

NEWS MEANS GOOD NEWS (International)
The Airports mull new superjumbo hassles:
It is one thing to build a really, really big airplane. It is quite another to
find a place for it to land. U.S. airports from Seattle to Atlanta say
accommodating Airbus new super jumbo A380 in anything other than an emergency
would require major construction. Runways would need widening and terminals
would need upgrades to load and unload the double-decker plane easily. Even with
those improvements, airports might need to curtail other airport traffic to let
the big jet lumber through the airfield. (Associated Press, Washington)

Festival of Saraswat cuisine in Goa attracted a large number of visitors end of
January. Generally visitors to Goa tend to think of Goan food and drink as being
limited to the famous fish, curry, rice and feni package. But Goan cuisine, like
the land itself, has many flavours and tastes with its vast treasure trove of
culinary delicacies. People got an opportunity to taste different types of Goan
cuisine at this food festival. Saraswat Brahmins are considered to be a minority
in Goa. The first Brahmins to settle in Goa, were called Saraswats because of
their origins from the banks of the River Saraswati, an ancient river that
existed in Vedic times. The subsequent drying up of the river caused large scale
migration of Brahmins. TOP
