FESTIVALS / MARTS & EVENTS
BONDERAM
FESTIVAL: The feast of Bonderam is
celebrated on the fourth Saturday of August every year at Divar Island, 12-km from Panjim in Goa. The name Bonderam revolves around
the involvement of flags which in itself is an interesting story. Frequent
disputes which occurred between two wards (section of the village) - Piedalda
and Sao Mathias - over property matters often led to bloody duels, and
sometimes death. Subsequently, the Portuguese introduced a system of
demarcation of boundaries with flags of various nations. The rival groups,
however, knocked down the demarcation flags sometimes with stones. Today, in a
parody of the past, this is commemorated with a "Fotash" flight (toy weapon of
bamboo stem) and berries are used as missiles in a mock fight between rival
groups to knock down an offending flag. An expectant crowd assembles along
either side of the main thorough fare of the village.
GANESH FESTIVITIES
(10 – 20 SEP’2002): Just concluded Ganesh festival,
for Hindus, is almost like Christmas New Year festive period in Maharashtra
& Goa regions. This lovely God is the son of Lord Shiva & His wife
Parvati and who is elephant headed with one half broken tooth, loves sweets
and rides a rat! He is the God of wisdom and prosperity and remover of all
obstacles. That is why he is remembered before embarking on any major work. In
his four hands, he holds a charka (wheel), shell, lotus and mace.
Earlier this festival was purely celebrated at home, till Bal Gangadhar Tilak,
famous social reformer and freedom fighter, made it into a community affair
wherein rich and poor could participate together. The beauty of religious
harmony can be found in Goa where they even share the church ground for the
functions for this festival!
Preparations for this begin well
in advance. A clay idol is established and worshipped. People visit their
ancestral homes and all relatives meet together. Classical singing, community
programmes, various competitions and shows are arranged.

ENCOURAGING TRAVEL
TRENDS IN THAILAND: A year after
the tragic events in the United States shook
the world and sent
international tourism into a tailspin, the flow of visitors to Thailand
remains steady, the Nation newspaper reported 9 Sep. Juthamas Siriwan, the
newly appointed governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, was quoted as
saying that she expects nothing out of the ordinary to happen and visitor
arrivals to continue as usual. Thailand has been affected less than
neighboring countries, she said, adding that there were no reported
cancellations from overseas tourists planning to come to Thailand on Sept. 11.
In the first half of the year, the country saw the number of American tourists
declining 3.6 percent to 252,825, while Malaysia experienced a drop of 30.14
percent, Australia reported that the number of US tourists was down 14 percent
and Singapore welcomed 11.9-percent fewer visitors from the United States, the
report said. Courtesy Travelwirenews
PATA SPEAKS OUT
AGAINST CHILD ABUSE IN TOURISM: PATA Vice
President-Development Mr. Peter Semone represented PATA at a forum in Phnom
Penh, Cambodia, to tackle the issue of sexual abuse of children in tourism
destinations. He told delegates at the August 30-31 meeting: "The law
enforcement agencies in these countries need to strictly enforce their
country's current legislation on child prostitution. Only then can we protect
our children and finally put an end to this destructive business." The event
was hosted by Child Wise Tourism (ECPAT in Australia) and the Royal Government
of Cambodia Ministry of Tourism.
DE JONG HIGHLIGHTS
INTRA-REGIONAL GROWTH: PATA
President and CEO Mr. Peter de Jong addressed the World Travel & Tourism
Council Retreat in Agra, India, August 23-25. In a presentation entitled "The
Sinews of Revival," Mr de Jong told delegates: "During 2001, only 21 percent
of total international arrivals [to the Pacific Asia region] originated in
non-PATA markets. Almost 80 percent of arrivals in that year came from within
the region. That becomes very apparent in the case of Southeast and Northeast
Asia and illustrates why they were less affected by the economic, political
and social ills that beset the world during 2001."

Climbers for Peace:
IIPT was honored to
join with the Himalayan Club, Green Globe, Pacific Asia Travel Association and
SKAL International in endorsing the members of the IUCN-UIAA Summit Team in
their climb together in Switzerland between 24 and 29 August 2002.
The purpose of the climb was to recognize the success of the Swiss Government
in achieving UNESCO World Heritage status for the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn
region and to promote trans-boundary co-operation for sustainable development
and peace. The climb was particularly noteworthy as the Team was comprised of
mountaineers from India and Pakistan and a quadruple amputee from
Scotland. Notable firsts of the climbing team included climbs of the via
Ferrata on the Tour d'Ai (2330m), Les Diablerets (3209m), and the Monch
(4099m). A full record of activities is available from http://www.iucn.org/ and http://www.uiaa.ch/.
The Summit Team stressed the value
of international links and exchanges in sport, culture and tourism as
effective vehicles for promoting peace, cooperation and understanding among
people of different backgrounds. The Team also hopes that sports organizations
in India and Pakistan will make new efforts to share and enjoy the common
sporting and cultural interests of the two nations that would lead to
co-operation and understanding. IIPT is currently exploring ways to sustain
this noble initiative in promoting understanding between
India and
Pakistan through Tourism, Culture and Sport at the Second
Global Summit in Geneva and is hopeful that one or more members of the
climbing team will be able to join us at the Summit. Source

NATURE DOES MATTER
SUNDERBANS TO BE

Bengal Government is planning to develop a US Dollars 140 million project
encompassing islands in the Sunderbans, billed as the world’s largest mangrove
swamp. The Project envisages a five-star floating hotel, besides catamaran
services for tracing the course of the river through the swamps and creating

National
Geographic covers India's Western Ghats to kick-off
new "Hotspot" series: The biosphere
is wonderfully rich. So great is the diversity of life forms, that we have
still not taken its measure. And yet, it is also very fragile - ill equipped
to withstand humanity's relentless assault on the habitats in which they live.
The human species has become a more destructive force than storms and droughts. Half the world's forests are gone, many coral reefs are
fading away, pollution and damming are causing the wholesale extinction of
native aquatic species, and greenhouse warming threatens the existence of
entire ecosystems. Researchers generally agree that extant species are now
vanishing at least 100 times faster than new ones are being born. Is there any
way to save some of what remains?
A providential
arrangement in the geography of life makes it possible. Biodiversity is not
uniformly distributed - a large part is concentrated in a relatively small
number of habitats. By preserving these "hotspots", conservation biologists
say, it should be possible to protect a large part of Earth's threatened flora
and fauna. India's Western Ghats, one of Earth's richest ecosystems, is one
such "hotspot".
The Western
Ghats are the mountain chain that runs for nearly 1000 miles along India's
South Western coast. The Ghats serve as the principal watershed for all of
peninsular India, capturing a major portion of the rain each monsoon. The
ancient Sanskrit name, Sahyadri, meaning "benevolent mountain" is apt, for
without the mountains' ability to absorb monsoon rains and release them
gradually over the rest of the year, life in Southern India would be
impossible. Some 60 rivers (including the Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery), a
wide variety of forest cover, and a tropical climate have led to a diversity
of plant and animal riches that are only now beginning to be
understood.
Commercial
exploitation of the Western Ghats began in the 19th century, during British
rule - the ecologically rich mix of rain forest and grasslands were displaced
by tea gardens, eucalyptus trees, and coffee, cashew and cardamom plantations.
Things did not let up, even after Independence. India's exploding population
and eagerness to modernize have seen evergreen forests giving way to mines,
roads and massive irrigation and hydroelectric projects. By the end of the
20th century, the 62,000 square miles of undisturbed forest that are believed
to have covered the Ghats at the beginning of the century had been reduced to
less than 5000.

PERMANENT FEATURE - GOA
Goa
Opens Its Heritage Homes To Tourists: Through its ‘Go
Goa 365 Days A Year’ campaign, the Goa government, is to reap rich benefits of
a previously untapped resource. The state is putting in place plans to upgrade
a number of its heritage houses with modern amenities and open it for
tourists, either for accommodation purposes or as a heritage site of
archeological importance.
Since September
last year, domestic tourism has registered an increase of 18 per cent, which
is very positive sign. This has urged to reinvent Goa as a tourism product
highlighting features which have historical and architectural importance. With
over a hundred heritage homes, it only seems apt that we promote heritage
tourism in Goa.
“The heritage
houses scheme has been take up by the government of Goa to ensure that very
old houses of Goan architecture are preserved and maintained. The main idea
behind this scheme is to preserve and maintain heritage houses that are over
200 years old.” Fifteen houses have tentatively been identified while the
scheme is still to be finalised. Ten of these houses have shown keen interest
in renting their homes to tourists. The average cost of restoration is
reportedly approximately Rs 5 lakh per house and the modalities for funding
this scheme is been worked out. “The renovation programme is completely
sponsored by the department of tourism, government of Goa. The draft scheme
has already been submitted to Government of India, for their perusal and
request for central financial assistance.”
It is also learnt that of the
fifteen properties, ten will be offered for accommodation while the others
will be open for sightseeing purposes. The original tenants will continue to
stay in these houses. In homes made available to tourists for accommodation,
certain rooms will be offered to the tourists while the original tenants will
occupy the rest of the house.

‘Hashers’
to descend on Goa in the fourth week of September: This is the first
time an international meet of the Hash House Harriers is being held in India.
This group was founded in Kuala Lumpur by British expatriates. The Hash House
is a nickname for the restaurant at the Royal Selangor Club in the Malaysian
capital. Forty per cent of the ‘hashers’ are women. Some 3560 participants
have already registered for the South Goa meet from September 27-29. ‘Hashers’
aim is to do a bit of cross-country jogging, followed by a convivial
gathering, with the aim of working off the “excesses of the weekend”. Says
Frederick half-jokingly, “We’re a running club with a drinking problem.”
Beer-guzzlers of this like now have a claimed fraternity of about 2,200 clubs
in some 180 countries. It is a fraternity.
In Goa, over two
dozen runs are planned. Runs would take this odd group to Old Goa, the ruins
of historic forts like Cabo de Rama, Goa’s famed beaches, and even to a spice
plantation. One run would take participants to the local unit of a brewery,
near Ponda, some 30 kms from here. This brewery is to sponsor 150,000 cans of
beer, each of 330 ml, calculated to be guzzled at the rate of around 12 cans
per participant a day! Of course, this is not serious athletics. Hash runs are
not competitive. There are different lengths of runs, to suit varying fitness
levels. Very short runs, short runs (5-6 km), not-so-short runs (9-10 km) and
‘not even slightly short runs’ (13-14 km). Average age of hashers is 45-60
years old. Organisers stress that they’re “not hippies, but people who have
done well in life”. Some, they say, include diplomats.
HOST
OF ACTIVITIES TO BOOST TOURISM IN GOA: During the
next few months, Goa would be a hot-bed of multi-dimensional activities. In
December, the Junior World Chess Championship is being hosted which
would attract many tourists, especially from East & Central Europe – the
chess-loving regions. About 7000 odd exporters will be here exhibiting
their ware in February. The state is planning to organize and International
Film Festival in Goa too.
Russian charters
already
introduced Goa on its map and the inflow is expected to grow. Condor is
planning to make the charter flights from Germany a round the year activity.
At the same time, the South Korean market is also opening up this winter and
Goa seems to be getting more popular day by day.
At the same time,
a multi-million Rupees project has got approval to develop a man made lake
in Margao near the stadium. This would offer an elevated cyber café, 24
hours coffee shop, view pedestal and tower, children’s play park, water
activities like boating, jogging track, necklace promenade, etc. The
beautification of the natural water spring (it carries medicinal value) is
also underway!
SHACKS IN
GOA:
This time, they
have been allowed to put up the deck-bed chairs in front of their shacks. The
applications have to be sent in next one week. North Goa will have 113 and
South Goa 67 shacks in all. This time the first time, they have put up a
condition that each should have a mobile toilet.
GOA
Govt to ban use of plastic 'stuff' at tourist spots: The
notification to come into force from October 2, 2002, is issued to prohibit
the use and sale of plastic bags and bottles within the notified boundaries of
the wildlife sanctuaries of Cotigao, Mahavir and Bondla; of Miramar and
Caranzalem beaches located between Goa Marriott Resort and the precincts of
Cabo Raj Nivas; and of the Old Goa Complex of heritage monuments.
