HISTORICAL GOA: Goa  was liberated on 19 December 1961 along with Daman and Diu from 451 years  Portuguese colonial rule. It  became the 25th state of the Indian Union when it was conferred with statehood on May 30 1987. Goa is broadly divided into two parts - north and south Goa districts with headquarters at Panjim and Margoa respectively and 6 divisions comprising of 11 talukas.

FOOD: The daily food of every Goan no matter which religion one follows is rice, fish and curry. Rice varies from polished, unpolished and parboiled to the richly flavoured basmati. The base of the curry is grated coconut and coconut milk. The addition of a fish give ‘ummon or koddi'. The Portuguese too had a strong influence on Goan cuisine and some of the popular dishes like sorpotel and deserts like bebinca were introduced in Goa by the Portuguese.

TOWNS

PANJIM: A small and a charming city on the banks of the river Mandovi, is the capital of Goa and headquarters of north Goa district. The annual film festival takes place here as this is the permanent venue for the same.

MARGAO: Is the headquarters of south Goa district. In the hinterland of the southern Goa in Salcette taluka is a thriving commercial metropolis is in linked by rail to rest  India.

VASCO: A modern and well laid city to the Mormugao harbour, this city has beautiful and extensive avenues. It is situated on the banks of the river Zuari.

There are other towns as well like Mapusa, Ponda, etc.

BEACHES

Betul beach in south Goa

CALANGUTE: It is one of the most popular holiday spots in Goa and lies in the north.

COLVA: This beach is the pride of Salcette and the only rival to Calangute in its scenic splendour. Here, sand, sea and the sky blend in enchanting harmony. It is about 6 km from Margao town.

MIRAMAR: A lovely golden beach of soft girdled with palms facing the sea. It is the nearest beach to Panjim.

PALOLEM: Just west of Canacona, this is one of the most enchanting beaches in Goa relativity deserted.

CHURCHES

BASILICA DE BOM JESUS: Built in the 16th century it is the most popular and famous of all churches. The mortals of St. Francis Xavier are kept here and every ten years an exposition takes place.

REIS MAGOS: The Reis Magos church was constructed in 1555. It is one of the earliest churches that was built in Goa and the 1st in Bardez Taluka. It is dedicated to the three Magi- kings.

RACHOL SEMINARY: Situated just off the banks of the river Zuari 12 km from Margao, it was built in 1521 by the Portuguese.

TEMPLES

SHRI MANGUESHI: Dedicated to lord Shiva, This temple is situated at Priol, In Ponda. Its lofty White tower entrance is a landmark of the country side.

SHRI DAMODAR: Originally from Cuncolim village in Salcette, The statue of the goddess was brought to Fatorpa, in 16 th century during religious prosecution by the Portuguese and is the site of the famous week long Shigmo festival.

OTHER IMPORTANT ATTRACTIONS

AGUADA FORT: Built by the Portuguese in 1601-1612, to command the entry into the Mandovi river in order to protect old Goa from enemy attacks. The fort houses presently the central jail.

DUDHSAGAR WATERFALLS: This place is only accessible by train or jeep plus little trekking. Water plummets hundreds of feet in large volume in cascades forming one of the most spectacular of all natural phenomena in Goa.
